The Art of Joe Coleman
I came across the art of Joe Coleman while listening to a podcast about the serial killer Carl Panzram. I wanted to see what Panzram looked like, and “Google Imaged” him… coming across this fantastic painting.
I was hooked. I started browsing his work… and found a rich tapestry of American characters from serial killers to musicians, physicists to motorcycle builders.
Subjects of his portraits have included PT Barnum, Albert Fish, Ed Gein, Jayne Mansfield, Edgar Allan Poe and Hank Williams.
The paintings are illustrative and intricate – almost bejewelled, and have both a iconic and surreal cartoon-like feel. Beautiful, engaging and more than a little disturbing, right up my alley. You can find out more about the work of Joe Coleman on his website.
